My name is Derek Southgate and Southecom Ltd is my company. My background is IT strategy and product development, mainly in the Lloyd's of London insurance market.
My Mission
To help organisations to make the best use of their IT expenditure, by assisting in realistically reviewing existing systems, helping to set future strategy, and assisting or managing all stages of operational or system development.
Key abilities
Problem solving – I have frequently been used as a problem solver of last resort on anything from PC operational problems to major system design and implementation problems.
IT strategy – the ability to assess the importance and criticality of new technology and usage trends has always been a strength of mine. My current projects involve ASP.Net 1.1 and 2.0, virtual machines, active directory, SQL 2000 and 2005, Microsoft Reporting Services and Windows 2003. This and my knowledge of how we got here helps greatly in supplier negotiations!
Creation of practical, affordable and deliverable systems – which have succeeded in the market place, and which have frequently exceeded any estimates of longevity by many years.
Applying automation – much of the effort that goes into running systems is unnecessary and is much better where consistent, self monitoring automated processing can be devised.
Flexibility - I have always ensured that I have retained the abilities to backup my projects with practical assistance with operational and development issues.
